2100 local – 18 hours later

The six operators spread out across the darkened beach. They carefully and tactfully moved up the gentle slope, leaving the cold ocean behind them and heading towards the relative protection of the tree line less than forty metres away.

They moved in complete silence. The sounds of the waves hitting the beach masked the crunching noise of the leaves and broken twigs under their feet. Kryton placed his left hand up to his side – the signal to come to a halt. Each operator was wearing NVGs, and immediately stopped upon seeing the signal. They all took a knee, the rear two operators facing back down the way they came, ensuring they had at least one team member looking in each direction for any threats.

They continued to stay silent, their chests heaving as they breathed in heavily – the result of the physical exertion required of the swim ashore after they had cached the SDV.

They had rehearsed the basic movement techniques back on Guam.

They would stay in position in complete silence for the next twenty minutes, allowing their senses to acclimatise to the new surroundings.

The small semi-tropical island was alive as a cacophony of buzzing insects and nocturnal animals scavenging amongst the foliage filled the night sky. Wildlife can detect foreign movement, sounds and smells in their environment, and will often go quiet until they’ve ascertained the potential threat. This lack of noise can betray the location of a small force seeking to infiltrate an enemy’s position, so the noise was most welcoming to the team.

Kryton looked at his wrist, illuminated by the green and black light of his NVG.

The waterproof G-Shock brand watch read out the time.

It was a little after 2130.

He looked around and gathered his thoughts. They were on schedule, and so far it appeared there was no compromise. He turned his watch over to expose the small circular compass attached to the wrist band. They had studied the maps and images closely as part of the planning. Kryton had a mental navigational map in his head, and they would be able to walk to point Charlie using just a watch and the compass.

He anticipated it would take the team approximately two hours to reach their intended destination. He reached down to the press on the talk switch of his radio.

“Comms check,” he said softly, wanting to do another radio check before stepping off to commence the walk.

“Cav.”

“Ando.”

“Macca.”

“James.”

“Fox.”

Each operator replied softly in turn – their respective radios proven to be working. Although they had this technology, they would conduct as much movement and communication as possible using hand signals, or at very most through soft whispering. The radios would be saved for when the team needed to break up, and was essentially a communication measure of last resort.

Kryton took a deep breath and waited.

After he was happy the right amount of time had passed and he was confident they were able to proceed, he turned around to face the sniper pair who were crouched down by a tree.
